Today marks the 30th anniversary of our very own Rutland Sheds opening up in Bearwood. Here, Neville & Erroll look back on the ups as well as downs – and look forward to the next 30!
WOW, How do you put 30 years into a few paragraphs and where has all the time gone?
It only seems like yesterday that two 19 year old kids had an idea about making garden sheds and fortunately came across a plot of land on the old Winchurch Motors site in Rutland Road, Bearwood. After discussions with the owner we were also offered the workshop next to it on a 6 month tenancy. Duly armed with a business plan and every penny we could raise we had a meeting with the bank manager at Barclays Bank and within 20 minutes convinced him to back us.
So on Tuesday 2nd April 1985 Rutland Sheds opened for business on Rutland Road opposite the old Safeways car park. 3 recessions endured, interest rates at 15% (remember them) but….here we are today 30 years later!
There have been some very challenging times and we have had to stay strong and work hard and appreciate any bit of luck that came our way.
We consider ourselves lucky to have had committed and professional members of staff who have helped us to grow into a company that provides sheds to most major national house building companies, local councils, schools etc.. We have also been providing buildings to the annual Christmas Frankfurt and Craft Market in Birmingham City Centre since the very start some 15 years ago (and we wondered if it would ever take off) We provide chalets to many Christmas markets all over the country and even as far afield as Glasgow but not forgetting our own Lightwoods Park in Bearwood.
Unfortunately, we have lost some very precious people along the way and will never forget them and what they did to help us along our path and make us what we are today and for that we will always be grateful.
We are also indebted to you the people of Bearwood who have used our services whether it be for garden buildings or fencing for the last 30 years and we are proud to be a part of this community. So rest assured that proud ‘Bearwood’ sign remains and always will on the sides of our trucks for everyone to see wherever we turn up in this country or beyond.
Once again a big thank you to everyone concerned we could not have done it without you.
Neville Price & Errol Grant.
