Runners-up again…

Warley Woods has finished 2nd again in the national vote for Britain's favourite community park in this year’s prestigious Green Flag People’s Choice Awards.

After finishing runner-up in the poll last year, Warley Woods was pipped this year by Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets, out of a staggering total of 1,424 parks and green spaces in the annual poll.

Chair of the Community Trust, Councillor Steve Eling said, “We would have liked to have gone one better this year, but finishing second for two years running demonstrates the tremendous affection which Warley Woods is regarded by our local community. In addition, It is great to see that Sandwell has three parks which finished in the top 10 in the voting, which reflects the commitment we have shown to looking after our green spaces. Not bad for an area which is constantly portrayed in the national media as grim and grey!”

Organised by Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Plus Partnership, which gives out Green Flag status to the best open spaces in the country, more than 7,000 people took place in this year's contest. The top ten in the voting were:

1) Victoria Park (London Borough of Tower Hamlets)

2) Warley Woods (Warley Woods Community Trust)

3) Whiteknights (University of Reading)

4) Alexandra Palace Park (Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust)

5) Millennium Country Park (Marston Vale Trust)

6) Valentines Park (Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure Trust)

7) Tipton Cemetery (Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council)

8) Queen Elizabeth Country Park (Hampshire County Council / Forestry

9) Sandwell Valley Country Park (Sandwell Metroplitan Borough Council)

10) Myatt’s Fields Park (London Borough of Lambeth)

Well done Sandwell! Warley Woods has always been beautiful but since the trust took it over it is even more special, and how wonderful to have a cemetery in the top ten.

Well done to everyone at Warley Woods I only hope that sometime in the near future we at Lightwoods can emulate our ‘big sister’ and be in the top ten

We are going to have two fantastic parks both in the top ten.

We are so lucky in Bearwood to have these two parks that the community really care for. I know it has been a hard slog to get ownership of both of them so that we could bring them back to their former glory, but we have achieved that with both.

So, its down to us; we proved those that only want to run down Bearwood wrong with Warley Woods, and we will do it again with Lightwoods.
