Following the success of last year’s event the ‘Festival’ is returning to Lightwoods Park! The festival will take place this Sunday, 10 June 2012 and will run between 11.00am – 4.00pm.
The action starts straight away with live bands opening up the event on the stage and Colin Hall’s Gypsy Blood (an acoustic folk band) starting on the bandstand at 11.00am. The skate park user group will kick start the BMX, skate board and scooter competition on the recently refurbished and Sandwell’s only concrete skate park and the Sandwell’s Strongest Man Competition will commence on the bowling green in front of the house!
The event, organised by Sandwell Council’s Parks and Countryside Services along with the Friends of Lightwoods Park, will be a family, fun-filled, action packed day out and there will be someone for everyone!
There will be live music on a specially-built stage and will feature the Monicas, Indie Shenanigans, 360, Colin Hall’s Rebel Soul, Esther Turner plus more. These bands are a mix of Rock, Indie, Soul, Ska, Reggae, Rhythm and Blues and the compere will be a surprise guest!
The bandstand will be busy with acts all day from dance demonstrations by the Funky Fusion Dance Group and JemNus Danceworks and Morris Dancers, to the B Cups (a ukulele band) and the Halesowen Brass Band.
The day will also feature a skate park competition, an inflatable it’s a knockout, rodeo bull and bungee run, a fun fair, climbing wall, craft workshops for children, refreshments and lots of market stalls for you to shop your way through.
Sandwell’s Strongest Man Competition is a new addition to this year’s event. It is moving to Lightwoods Park from Hadley Stadium in hope to attract a wide audience. Competitors will take part in a variety of events including, a Dead Lift, Car Hold, Farmers Walk, Tyre Flip, Carry and Drag, Overhead Log Lift, and a Vehicle Pull.
Council officers and members of the Friends Group will also be gathering and recording information, thoughts and ideas from any visitor who wants to have their say as to how they would like to see Lightwoods Park and Lightwoods House be restored under the £3.2 million Heritage Lottery Project which is currently in the development phase.
Parking for the Festival will be on the park extension off Galton Road and will cost £2 per car. If you have further enquiries about the event please contact Cherie O’Sullivan, Lightwoods Park Project Officer, on 0121 569 4740.
