The Bearwood Blog can exclusively reveal that in a spectacular coup for Lightwoods Park, the Friends Group are looking to turn the park into a winter wonderland in the run up to Christmas.
The Friends Group are in the process of sealing a deal which will bring the giant ice rink usually located in Broad Street in Birmingham to the bowling green in front of Lightwoods House for the week before Christmas.
Chair of the Friends Group, Richard Marshall, who has been negotiating the deal, said, “When I realised the event couldn’t take place in Broad Street because of the new library building work, I thought, what an opportunity for Bearwood!
“We have been in discussions with councillors and council officers, and they are very keen to bring the event to Bearwood. We are on two major bus routes that can bring people from far and wide to Bearwood, and I am really excited about the project. In the next couple of days we will be asking for volunteers with skills around running events, marketing etc. to come forward and form a steering committee for the event.
“I think this could be a spectacular event for Bearwood, and also a real boost for businesses on Bearwood Road in the busy Christmas shopping week. We are intending to have stalls selling food, drink and other items, lighting up Lightwoods House and maybe involve local schools and churches in carol singing.”
This is very exciting news…it will be fantastic if it happens!!!
wow, fabulous news for bearwood. well done to the team that made it happen.
This would be magical. ice skating outdoors is just lovely and far better in a green space than in a city centre. I went all the way to Trentham Gardens in Stoke to do this. Fingers crossed.
Exciting News! Father Christmas and his Grotto too? Maybe he could detour after Warley Woods on his way back to Oldbury…sorry Greenland!
I think there has been talk of perhaps Santa on the bandstand. With Christmas lights on the bandstand it could be quite spectacular!
That sounds fantastic! Well done to everyone involved. Now… where did put those skates??
This is fantastic news – well done Richard for seizing the opportunity. This will be such a spectacular event putting Bearwood on the map! Congratulations to everyone involved in getting this off the ground!
This will be amazing, great news for Bearwood and everyone who loves living here…
This is fantastic news! My sons were so excited when I shouted this news down the stairs to them this morning! You should’ve heard the whoops!!!
Great news! Well done everyone.
Excellent news I will send this email to all that would be interested in the West-Midlands the more customers the better
Thanks John.
Well done, Richard, for seizing the initiative! I told members of Smethwick Local History Society about it last night, and they thought it was an excellent idea.
YES! Major coup for Bearwood, fingers crossed!
That is brilliant news for Bearwood, the park will look brill. We have done the catering at the Bearwood Shuffle the last twice and would be available for this project. Would love to be involved.
Cheers
Caroline
Wow really good news.
Why not visit “The Beach”, in Bearwood as well skating and “The Beach”
that must be a first!!!!
And for the future…perhaps a mini German Market ??? I’m sure German Sausage and the Glühwein (German mulled wine), taste better in Bearwood than the city centre ! Well done to all the people involved in getting the Ice Rink to Bearwood.
Just amazing, would love to see this happen!!
Would love to see some old fashioned community carol singing – have enjoyed “Carols on the Green” in Bournville so much in recent years (and it is incredibly popular) and would love to have a local version!
Joe, coming shortly… Keep watching!
