Bearwood on Ice

The Bearwood Blog can exclusively reveal that in a spectacular coup for Lightwoods Park, the Friends Group are looking to turn the park into a winter wonderland in the run up to Christmas.

The Friends Group are in the process of sealing a deal which will bring the giant ice rink usually located in Broad Street in Birmingham to the bowling green in front of Lightwoods House for the week before Christmas.

Chair of the Friends Group, Richard Marshall, who has been negotiating the deal, said, “When I realised the event couldn’t take place in Broad Street because of the new library building work, I thought, what an opportunity for Bearwood!

“We have been in discussions with councillors and council officers, and they are very keen to bring the event to Bearwood. We are on two major bus routes that can bring people from far and wide to Bearwood, and I am really excited about the project. In the next couple of days we will be asking for volunteers with skills around running events, marketing etc. to come forward and form a steering committee for the event.

“I think this could be a spectacular event for Bearwood, and also a real boost for businesses on Bearwood Road in the busy Christmas shopping week. We are intending to have stalls selling food, drink and other items, lighting up Lightwoods House and maybe involve local schools and churches in carol singing.”

This would be magical. ice skating outdoors is just lovely and far better in a green space than in a city centre. I went all the way to Trentham Gardens in Stoke to do this. Fingers crossed.

Would love to see some old fashioned community carol singing – have enjoyed “Carols on the Green” in Bournville so much in recent years (and it is incredibly popular) and would love to have a local version!
